BAA Scotland, which runs the airport, said yesterday it would apply for planning permission for a direct access road from the nearby Gogar roundabout in February or March. The move follows concern at increasing traffic on the current access road at peak times, especially when major events are being staged at the adjacent Ingliston showground. Passengers using the airport are increasing annually by 7 per cent to nearly eight million a year, and BAA ultimately wants a direct motorway link from the M8 to Edinburgh airport. The road from Gogar is seen as necessary because new public transport links are at least five years away. A tram line from the city centre is not expected to be completed until 2009, and a through rail link not until 2010. A BAA Scotland spokesman said the link was initially likely to be a single carriageway, which could be widened to a dual carriageway later. He said: "Eastfield Road is manageable at the moment, but it can get very busy. If there is even a minor accident or an event at Ingliston, it can very quickly seize up." Motoring groups gave the plan a guarded welcome, but public transport campaigners called on BAA to fund it. Airport Parking Homepage |
