BAA Workers In Strike Ballot
Unite has started a fresh ballot of strike action, but instead of it being aimed at British Airways a battle that it seems to have lost, their attention is now fixed on BAA after their workers were offered a 1% pay rise and bonuses dependent on the companies economic performance.
Over 6000 workers will be asked to vote on a proposed strike during the summer holidays, when many families will be planning their vacations. BAA workers at Heathrow, Stansted, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Southampton and Aberdeen workers will have the next three weeks to cast their vote.
BAA state that considering the current state of the air travel industry due to recession and volcanic ash, it was a fair offer. They also added that if a strike went ahead it would ruin the UK’s international reputation and cause mass worry to the UK public.
Brendan Gold the national officer for civil aviation at Unite called the 1% offer confrontational, stating that last year workers accepted a pay freeze which helped the airport owner find its feet again, only to repay its workers with this measly offer.
If the planned strike does go ahead Flypark customers can amend their bookings for any airport parking or airport hotel parking packages they have booked or cancel up to 24 hours before their departure date, if cancellation protection has been taken out at a cost of 99p. |
