Recession continues to hit travel Industry
Bmibaby is to reduce its fleet by five aircraft to 12 next year with the loss of almost 160 jobs.
The job losses will include 54 pilot and 82 cabin crew positions at Birmingham, Manchester and Cardiff airports, plus an additional 22 management and support positions at head office and airport bases.
The cuts come against a background of the worst economic recession in recent times and record losses in the aviation industry, the airline said.Part of the shake-up will create opportunities for new destinations to be introduced next year from East Midlands Airport.
Focus will be on those destinations that attract the most holidaymakers, making them more viable than not so popular routes. Ten pilot and 15 cabin crew positions will be created at East Midlands.
A spokesman stated that the airline had created a top niche in the budget flight industry, and continued to so, despite the fact that it was facing tough times. He added that the company was experiencing heavy losses and that remedial action had to be taken.
To keep costs down when booking East Midlands airport parking look to book at the cheaper off airport car parks.
