Stansted and Gatwick see travel numbers fall
The first 3 months of this year has seen a dramatic fall in travellers using Gatwick and Stansted airports. Gatwick and Stansted are already showing reductions of nearly 15% with the short haul European destinations most badly affected. BAA also blame the snow in February and the late Easter and whilst these are factors it is clear that the recession is the main reason for the poor performance and with little prospect for improvement over the next 12 months. Whilst travellers are expected to take at least holiday abroad, the second or third trip have been put on the back burner with the real fear of being made unemployed ever present. These are quite natural reactions and until confidence returns saving over spending will mean the recovery will take even longer. The travel industry is once again taking the brunt of this recession and the reality is that there will be bargains over the next 12 months. For customers using these airports airport parking will undoubtedly be the cheapest seen for many years.
