Lap top experiment ends.

An airport security trial allowing some passengers passing through Heathrow Airport and Glasgow Airport to leave their laptops in their bags has ended, the Times reports. For the last 18 months travellers at the airports have been able to leave their laptops in their hand luggage as they had been using sophisticated scanners which could see deep inside a bag or briefcase to conduct the trial, reducing the amount of time and hassle for people passing through security.

A DfT spokesman told the Times: ‘Current EU law requires that all laptops be removed from bags at airport screening points. For the past 18 months the UK has been - with permission from the EU - carrying out a limited technology trial at two airports where laptops were permitted to remain in bags at screening points. The trial has now finished and the results will be evaluated.'

A spokesperson from BAA, which owns the two airports involved in the trial, told the newspaper: ‘Passengers carrying laptops as cabin baggage are now required to remove them from bags for security screening. Passengers are being informed of the requirement before arriving at security areas across the airports.’
