Mexicana withdraws its Gatwick service
Mexico’s national airline which was only launched in October 2008 has suspended all flights out of London Gatwick after failing to come to an agreement with unions to reduce staff costs. The airline has racked up debts of £628 million with the swine flu epidemic having deterred many visitors.
Holidays can be as much about habit and many USA tourists in particular found alternative destinations during this time and the expected up turn has not materialised because the US economy nose dived at about the same time.
The airline stated on its website that due to the unions failing to accept their cost cutting measures the service was no longer profitable. Even though savings of £500 million had been reached the operation was still too expensive.
They went on to say their pilots were paid 50% more than other airlines and the cabin crew staff were on 32% more than its rivals. Customers who are booked to fly out of Gatwick with Mexicana will be re-booked on to other flights, if you are one of these customers you can ring 0808 101 7600 with any queries.
