Birmingham Airport
The airport is about 8 miles from
Birmingham city centre off the M42 motorway, which connects
to the M1 to the east and M6 to the West. Despite being the
fourth largest city in England with a huge catchment area
to draw on, Birmingham Airport passenger numbers at 8 million
are relatively small compared to Manchester Airport at 19
million, Gatwick airport 32 million and Heathrow Airport at
a staggering 63 million. Whilst the nearby Nottingham East
Midlands airport has undoubtedly affected passenger growth
due to low cost airlines such as BMI baby and Ryanair establishing
themselves there, the same can be said for Stansted airport
and Luton airport which has not stopped the growth of Gatwick
and Heathrow.
The government have recently announced
that Birmingham airport is the chosen airport for the Midlands
and widening and extension of the runway will be a part of
this development although there is no time limit currently
earmarked. The airport is currently undergoing a 20 million
development to increase terminal, multi storey car parking
and improved road access.
The one major advantage Birmingham
airport has over its bigger rivals is that from a customer
viewpoint the airport is easier to move around with luggage
retrieval far quicker. The new M6 toll has also helped ease
congestion on the M6, which links to the M42, this being said
the nearby National Exhibition Centre greatly adds to the
traffic on the M42 and customers are, advised to check on
events at the NEC to avoid delays.
Flypark offers two cark parks for
Birmingham airport with one located West of the airport and
one to the East. We recommend that customers view the location
of each car park prior to booking and choose the car park
closest to them.
