Aalborg

Aalborg is situated on the northern tip of the Jutland peninsular, and traces its history back over 1000 years. It was originally settled as a trading post, and has now become a major Scandinavian tourist attraction, with its fine Renaissance architecture, museums, art and historic quarters, children’s water parks, theatre and legendary nightlife. There really is something for all the family.

Aalborg is home to the beautiful North Jutland Art Museum, designed by the renowned Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, and has become world renowned for its modern art. The Aalborghus Castle is located in the centre of town, surrounded by the picturesque houses of the 17th century, and a stroll through the pedestrian precincts of Aalborg's old city centre will take you to Jens Bangs Stenhus, one of Europe's largest town houses of the Renaissance period, and to Obels Plads, a square transformed in winter into the city's ice rink

.

Underneath the main pedestrian shopping street is a newly opened museum of the excavation of a monastery from the 11th century.

The annual Aalborg Carnival takes place usually the last weekend in May. The Carnival is actually three events. There is the children's carnival (Børnekarneval), which is a carnival dedicated to the children, with performances and activities for children. Then there is ‘The Battle of the Carnival Bands" which is an exciting and colourful evening, with processions through the city of all the participating groups. The carnival itself is the following Saturday – on this day the city centre is full of life. The streets are filled with people, often dressed in gaily-decorated costumes, and in the Kildeparken concerts are performed all throughout the day till midnight when the Carnival ends with a grand firework display.

The city has several theatre venues, and the Aalborg Congress & Culture Centre is the centre for North Jutland's music and theatre scenes: each year it puts on more than 150 events from opera, to musicals and exhibitions. Then there are the galleries, shops and the legendary Jomfru Ane Gade (Virgin Anne’s Street), famous throughout Denmark, with restaurants, bars, clubs and live-music cafés a host of small, speciality shops.
