Please take your pet to the airport and then return to the car park for onward transfer. Please note that none of the car operators will transfer pets. The following is a quick summary of the scheme and the countries which the UK currently allow access. Countries are continually being added and deleted and the following web site www.defra.gov.uk/ani malh/quarantine/index.htm and your vet should always be consulted.
Briefly the procedure is as follows and must be undertaken in this order.
- Have your pet microchipped by a vet for identification purposes.
- Rabies vaccination. This must be done even if your pet has already been vaccinated.
- A blood test to ensure the rabies vaccine has given your pet sufficient protection.
After this process has been undertaken and the vet has issued the necessary documentation you then need to wait a further 6 months from the date of the blood test.
Your pet effectively is issued with a EU
pet passport showing the microchip identification number, which can be
compared when your pet is travelling together with the dates of the vaccine
and blood test. Before you renter the UK your pet needs to be treated
against ticks and tapeworm. This treatment needs to be given within a
time frame of between 24 and 48 hours before your return to this country.
In essence you need to plan your return to this country and organise a
visit to a vet abroad to coincide with this time frame. As the scheme
is becoming more popular more vets abroad are offering this service. You
will need to travel by an approved transport company, which can be a shipping
line or airline company. Each airport or shipping line have their own
special areas to which your pet needs to be taken. You will need to contact
these centres beforehand.
